The 4 Circles of Success: Securing Your Own Success

For senior leaders, achieving success requires more than just individual talent and ambition. Once you’re beyond a certain level your work won't speak for itself. While your skills and experience may have brought you to your current position, they are not enough to support your progression. You need to be intentional about developing your circles of success.

There are 4 circles of success:

  1. You

  2. Your Work

  3. Your Team

  4. Your Stakeholders

Leadership success requires a holistic approach across all of these circles. Most of us find that we gravitate to 1 or 2 areas more easily - usually we find focusing on our work the easiest - however, unless you’re developing all 4 areas you will find that your career progression may slow down or even stall.

By intentionally focusing on these circles of success, you will develop the skills, knowledge, and mindset necessary to achieve your goals and make a lasting impact in your organisation and beyond.

You: Investing in Yourself

The first circle of success is all about investing in yourself.

You are the driving force behind your own success. This means that you need to take ownership of your development, and actively work on improving your skills, knowledge, and abilities. This also means maintaining your physical and mental well-being.

By investing in yourself, you can build a strong foundation for success and be better equipped to lead others.

Here are some of the things you should be working on:

  1. Build Self-Awareness: This is the first step and means taking the time to reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses, and identifying areas where you need to improve. It also means seeking out feedback from others, and being open to constructive criticism.

  2. Develop Your Skills: Once you have identified areas where you need to improve, it's time to develop your skills. This may mean taking courses, attending conferences, or seeking out coaching or mentorship. The key is to be proactive in your own development, and to take ownership of your own learning.

  3. Build Your Network: Building a strong network of contacts is also essential for career success. This means not only connecting with other senior leaders in your organisation, but also with people outside of your immediate industry or field. Your Work: Maximising Your Impact

The second circle of success is all about maximising your impact to influence the organisation.

By focusing on your work, setting goals, and prioritising your efforts, you can maximise your impact and achieve great things.  You are responsible for driving results and achieving outcomes that benefit both your organisation and your stakeholders.

The things you should be focusing on include:

By setting clear goals, you can focus your efforts on the most important priorities, and ensure that you are making progress towards achieving them.

  2. Prioritising Your Time: As a senior leader, your time is a valuable resource. This means that you need to be intentional about how you spend your time, and prioritise your efforts on the tasks and activities that will have the greatest impact. This may mean delegating tasks to others, saying no to requests that are not aligned with your priorities, or re-prioritising your schedule as needed.

  3. Embracing Innovation: In today's fast-paced business environment, innovation is essential for success. This means being open to new ideas and approaches, and being willing to take calculated risks in order to drive results. By embracing innovation, you can stay ahead of the curve and position your organisation for long-term success.

Your Team: Leading with Purpose

The third circle of success is all about leading with purpose.

You are responsible for building, leading, and inspiring growth focused teams who work to achieve a shared vision that is aligned with the goals and values of your organisation. You will achieve this by empowering your team, setting clear expectations, and leading by example to create a culture of excellence that achieves extraordinary results.

There are key 3 focus areas here:

  3. Empower Your Team: As a senior leader, it's important to empower your team members to take ownership of their work and make decisions that align with the goals of the organisation. This means providing them with the resources and support they need to succeed, and giving them the autonomy to make decisions within their area of responsibility.

Your Stakeholders: Serving with Excellence

The fourth circle of success is all about serving your stakeholders with excellence.

You are accountable not just to your organisation, but also to a wide range of stakeholders including customers, shareholders, and the community at large. By understanding their needs and expectations, aligning your priorities with their interests, and measuring your impact, you can build strong relationships with your stakeholders and make a positive impact.

Here are 3 things to consider to successfully serve and manage your stakeholders:

  2. Align Your Priorities: Once you understand your stakeholders, it's important to align your priorities with their needs and expectations. This is about finding the common ground between what you do and what they want.

  3. Measure Your Impact: It's important to measure your impact and track your progress towards your goals. This means establishing metrics to track customer satisfaction, shareholder value, and other key performance indicators, and using that information to continuously improve your performance.
