Breaking Free From the 9-5 Grind
Can We Stop Pretending?
It’s time to stop pretending that we all fit into the ideal corporate world mould. It’s time to understand that the way we get work done benefits some, while the rest of us feel the soul-crushing pressure of trying to fit in.
A Call to Courage
Motherhood today is a constant juggling act, a relentless balancing of professional ambitions and the unyielding demands of raising children. The systemic and structural challenges that working mothers face are numerous and deeply ingrained. And increasing I've been considering that we as working mothers accept these challenges and obstacles too easily.
The Woman in the Mirror
For a few seconds I didn’t recognise this woman staring back at me in the bathroom mirror.
She simply glowed. Her hair artfully held up by sunglasses, just enough makeup on, gorgeous luminescent pearl earnings that seemed to amplify her light. It wasn’t specifically these details that had me catching my breathe, it was how she glowed, her inner strength and beauty shining so bright it was almost blinding.
For a split second I saw myself. I really saw myself in that bathroom mirror.
And this woman I saw was happy, confident, at peace and at ease with herself.
And I couldn’t believe it was me.
Motherhood Unveiled: Navigating the Beautiful Chaos
Motherhood is often portrayed as a seamless transition, a natural extension of womanhood. You see the insta-images of serene mothers gazing adoringly at their babies. We expect mothers to be the Madonna-esque images of perfection (I’m not referring to the Material Girl, but the other Madonna here 😀).
The Unexpected Gift of Motherhood
We were promised that we could have it all. And I never questioned if I wanted it all. Before the birth of my twin girls, I assumed I would add the label “mother” to my repertoire, and shift back into my life after maternity leave.
I didn’t know about the unexpected gift of motherhood.
Nothing is the same for us after the birth of our children. And some of these changes I expected, like the changes to my body and hormones, the interrupted sleep. Some were not. Like the seismic shift in my identity.
Why “Bouncing Back” Is Not An Option For Working Mothers
I fell into the ultimate working mother trap before – and after – my twins were born. I thought I needed to be bouncing back and was frustrated when I struggled to do just that.
Until I discovered that I wasn’t supposed to be “bouncing back” at all.
And I’ve caught myself feeling that this was the case. Angry with myself for not knowing more. And angry with the society we live in that has historically placed so little importance and value on motherhood. For me this is highlighted by the limited research available into what happens when a woman becomes a mother.
There is a plethora of research about parenting, and the act of mothering which provides tomes of data points for us to measure ourselves to and compare ourselves with. These usually leave us feeling like we’re utterly failing at motherhood.
And then there’s the standard career advice that supports the worker harder, be busy, never-stop-moving hustle culture of the modern world. None of which is helpful for working mothers.
Because there was so much I didn’t know before I became a working mother, I thought I’d share what I’ve learned on my journey.
