Navigating the Dual Realities: The Pros and Cons of Flexible Work for Moms

The landscape of the modern workplace is evolving rapidly, and with it comes a crucial recognition of the diverse needs of employees. For working moms, especially those with young children, flexibility in the workplace is often hailed as a game-changer.

The ability to balance professional responsibilities with the demands of parenthood can be a lifeline, allowing mothers to be actively present in their children's lives while pursuing meaningful careers.

"Flexibility is not just a workplace perk; it's a lifeline for working moms."Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO and author of "Lean In"

However, recently we’ve seen many large companies call for the return to the office (RTO). Some without any reason given to back up the RTO pressure. There have been some mostly vague mentions about the innovation, productivity and creativity benefits that come from physically being in the same space.

As a working mom, I believe in the benefits of flexible working to support all employees to build the balance they need – especially caregivers and parents - while also appreciating the benefits of physical proximity within office environments. And I know that in reality flexibility can be a double-edged sword.

What’s the real deal then when it comes to flexible work?

While flexible work arrangements are touted as the working moms solution to creating balance, the boon of flexibility is not without its challenges.

In this article, we will explore the myriad pros and cons of flexible work arrangements for working moms trying to effectively manage the delicate balance between career and family.

Pros of Flexible Work for Working Moms

In this section, we will explore the sunny side of flexible work arrangements—those aspects that illuminate the path for working moms seeking a delicate equilibrium between professional fulfilment and family life.

"The ability to balance work and life is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. Flexibility empowers women to thrive in both."Reese Witherspoon, Actress and Founder of Hello Sunshine

There are many significant benefits for working moms to being able to access flexible arrangements. The most obvious being:

  1. Work-Life Balance: One of the primary advantages of flexible work arrangements for working moms is the opportunity to achieve a better work-life balance. By having the flexibility to set their own schedules or work remotely, mothers can more seamlessly integrate professional and family responsibilities.

  2. Increased Job Satisfaction: Flexibility at work often leads to higher job satisfaction among working moms. The ability to tailor work hours or locations to meet family needs can contribute to a sense of control and empowerment, fostering a positive attitude towards both work and life.

  3. Reduced Stress Levels: Juggling the demands of work and family life can be incredibly stressful for working moms. Flexible work arrangements can alleviate this stress by allowing mothers to adapt their schedules to accommodate unexpected family obligations or emergencies.

  4. Enhanced Productivity: Contrary to common misconceptions, flexible work does not necessarily equate to decreased productivity. In fact, many working moms find that they are more productive when given the autonomy to choose when and where they work, allowing them to align their tasks with their peak energy and focus times.

  5. Attraction and Retention of Talent: Offering flexible work options is not just a benefit for employees; it's also a strategic move for employers. By embracing flexibility, companies can attract and retain top talent, including highly skilled and experienced working moms who might otherwise face barriers to employment.

Cons of Flexible Work for Working Moms

On the flip side of the coin, we venture into the shadows cast by flexibility, acknowledging the challenges that lurk beneath the surface.

"There's no substitute for face-to-face communication. Video calls are good, but they're not the same."Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX

From the perceived lack of visibility to struggles with setting clear boundaries and navigating communication barriers, there are obstacles that working moms might encounter as they embrace flexible work arrangements.

  1. Perceived Lack of Visibility: Despite the benefits, flexible work arrangements can sometimes lead to a perceived lack of visibility within the workplace. This can affect working moms' career advancement opportunities, as they may be seen as less committed or engaged due to their non-traditional work schedules.

  2. Struggles with Boundaries: The blurred lines between work and home life can create challenges for working moms, making it difficult to establish clear boundaries. This can lead to feelings of burnout as mothers find themselves constantly on call, switching between professional and domestic responsibilities without a clear transition.

  3. Communication Barriers: Remote work and flexible arrangements, can bring communication challenges. Working moms may feel isolated from their colleagues and miss out on spontaneous interactions that occur in a traditional office setting, potentially impacting teamwork and collaboration.

  4. Inequality in Access to Flexibility: Not all working moms have equal access to flexible work arrangements. Those in certain industries or positions may find it more challenging to negotiate flexible schedules or remote work options, exacerbating existing inequalities in the workforce.

  5. Stigma and Stereotypes: Despite progress, societal stereotypes surrounding the roles of women as primary caregivers persist. Working moms who embrace flexibility may face judgment or be subjected to outdated expectations, leading to feelings of guilt or inadequacy.

A Challenge to the Status Quo

As we navigate the landscape of flexible work arrangements for working moms, the challenges between its promises and challenges becomes unmistakably apparent.

And the tug of war between the virtual and physical workspace introduces a nuanced perspective. The real deal with flexible work lies in its dual nature, a double-edged sword that offers both liberation and challenges that demands careful navigation.

In this duality, there's a need for a personalised approach, a strategy that balances the benefits and challenges of flexible work. It's a recognition that flexibility is not a one-size-fits-all solution but a dynamic force that requires strategic management. And it is likely that this challenge to the status quo is not something that the more traditionally patriarchal corporations will accept lightly.

It becomes clear that the journey for working moms is not just about embracing or rejecting flexibility; it's about mastering the delicate art of balancing, adapting, and flourishing amidst the dual realities of modern work. The path forward lies in recognizing the value of flexibility while acknowledging and addressing the hurdles that may come our way.

It's a journey that demands resilience, advocacy, and a profound belief in the transformative power of navigating the dual realities of flexible work.

So what’s it to be working moms … are we campaigning for flexibility or will continue to struggle to build balance in a world that’s currently not designed to support us?
